Chihuahua's are an intelligent breed who enjoy investigating and like to play. They prefer to live with other dogs, preferably Chihuahua's and don't like being left alone for long periods of time.

They learn fast so it important not to be taken in by their size and baby them as they will soon have you waiting on them hand and foot. Make use of their intelligence, socialise them from and early age and allow them to be independent (don't treat them like a baby) and you will have a lovely well rounded pet dog.

These little dogs are not a fashion accessory and if you have no experience of owning a dog make sure you do plenty of research before choosing this breed. Once you are happy that this is the breed for you the next task to is to find the right breeder. Ideally you want a recommendation from someone who has a Chihuahua with a nice temperament. If noone you know owns a Chihuahua then visit The Kennel Club website to find a list of breeders and give a few a call to see which one you feel has the breeds best interest at heart. You want to ask questions about health checks and temperament, as well as the length of coat as you can choose between short coated or long coated.

Holly User rated 1/5

Would not get another Chihuahua... not as cute as they look. Holly has to be kept away from people as she bites without warning and although its not hard I am worried I will have to have her put to sleep.

Harriet User rated 5/5

My long-haired Chihuahua, Harriet is an absolute angel. She comes everywhere with me and is really gentle and affectionate. She has her own bedroom at home as I live in a 2 bed flat and her own little wardrobe.

She loves dressing up and is really patient when I get her dressed in the morning. I live in London and think Chihuahua's are perfectly suited for urban life. We go to the park at the weekends, but during the week she only really goes outside to the toilet. She hates puddles and if its raining I have to take her outside under my umberella.

Harriet will be 4 in the autumn so I am thinking about getting a short haired boy Chihuahua.
