The Rottweiler is a very arrogant, but loyal, powerful dog with a strong guarding instinct. They need to be socialised with other dogs, people and children from a very young age (6-8 weeks old).

This is not a breed suitable for people who are first time dog owners. Good breeders will want to know that you are an experienced dog handler before agreeing to let you have one of their puppies.

Rottweilers learn quickly, but don't like being manhandled. They will learn bad habits as quickly as good ones so it is essential to be firm but fair and always consistent.

Do not buy a Rottweiler from an inexperienced breeder, pet shop or puppy farm. Make sure the breeder knows the breed inside out and is happy to provide you with ongoing support if you need it.

This is a large breed so training should be ongoing to ensure that your Rottweiler is always under control. They need daily exercise and cannot be left on their own for long periods. They tend to form a strong bond with one family member in particular and fret if they are not around. As with all dogs they should not be left unattended with children, even when they are puppies.
